Moonlight Peaks: The Best Stardew-like Since Stardew

Quick honesty note before anything else: I haven't played this one myself. My wife has, and she has not stopped talking about it since.

She tried the free demo, nearly bought the full game on the spot, and has been recommending it to basically everyone we know. Her verdict, roughly translated: the best Stardew-like since Stardew. At some point I realised that's a stronger signal than most reviews I read, so here we are.

What it is

Moonlight Peaks is a cozy farming and life sim, an indie import from the Netherlands, and the twist writes itself: you play Dracula's kid, trying to build a quiet little farm life. Because you're a vampire, your working day runs from 6pm to 6am, you do all your farming by moonlight, and you'd better be back in your coffin before sunrise. My wife didn't clock the schedule at first, then laughed out loud when it hit her: oh right, they're vampires. They can't be in sunlight.

Instead of upgrading tools, you learn spells. The one she kept going on about is called Aquaflux, which summons a floating watering can that trundles around watering up to 16 crops on its own while you get on with something else. There's potion brewing too, and a town full of werewolves, witches and mermaids. She's only played the demo so she hasn't met the whole cast, but the ones she did meet, her word was delightful.

The writing is the thing

Her favourite part, by a mile, is the writing. She keeps reading lines out loud to me from across the room. And for once the internet agrees with my household: across the thousand-plus Steam reviews, the humour and the characters are the single most praised thing about the game. It sits at 89% positive out of roughly 1,100 reviews as I write this (20 July 2026), two weeks after launch.

The catch

My wife's one complaint: the fishing is nowhere near Stardew's.

What the wider reviews grumble about, consistently: long loading screens, no minimap (navigation is a bit clumsy), and some storage and menu tedium. And the writing praise isn't unanimous either; the main counterpoint is that daily NPC chatter can start repeating once you're a few in-game weeks deep. Nothing game-breaking in the lot, but you should know what you're getting into.

Why my own site won't show you this game

Here's the awkward bit. If you search SecludedGems right now, Moonlight Peaks will not come up, and that's by design. The site deliberately skips releases under six months old, to let the launch hype die down and give the reviews time to mature before it vouches for anything. Those rules don't have a "but my wife loves it" exception, so consider this me jumping my own queue, as a human, with full disclosure.

The practical bits

It's $34.99 on Steam, and I'll be honest, the seven-day launch discount is gone. I was too slow writing this. But there's a free demo, and it runs on Mac (macOS 14 and up), which is exactly how my wife played it, on her MacBook, no gaming PC involved. It's also Steam Deck Verified, and it's on Switch and Switch 2 if that's your couch setup.

My honest suggestion is the same one I'd want to hear: watch the trailer, try the demo, and if it clicks, stick it on your wishlist so Steam pings you when the next sale comes around.

If you've already optimised your Stardew farm to the point where every barn is making wine, or your farm is nothing but pigs for truffles, or you've divorced every romanceable character, or you've turned your own children into doves, maybe it's time to try farming by moonlight instead. And if you're mostly just waiting for Haunted Chocolatier like the rest of us, this might make the wait a bit more bearable.
